Engineering Intern

CUMULUS MEDIA Inc. Washington, DC (Onsite) Full-Time

CUMULUS MEDIA | Washington DC is searching for an Engineering Intern. The Engineering Intern assists the permanent engineering staff with the installation, maintenance, and repair of studio, transmitter, and ancillary equipment in order to maintain competitive signals in the market while complying with all FCC technical requirements. Includes: assisting with telecommunications, computer and networking systems.

Who We Are:

CUMULUS | Washington DC is home to radio stations 105.9 WMAL-FM, a Newstalk station with decades-long roots in DC Radio, and 630 WSBN, an ESPN radio affiliate featuring local sportstalk programming. The stations’ over-the-air broadcasts and national Internet streams reach an audience of thousands of listeners on a daily basis. Our studios and offices also host a branch of Westwood One, which originates daily network programming via satellite to radio affiliates across the United States.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Helps maintain station operation through preventative and corrective maintenance
  • Helps execute routine maintenance procedures and schedules for all broadcast equipment, automation, computer and network systems
  • Helps install and perform maintenance on broadcast consoles, audio routers, recording equipment, microphones, digital audio systems, transmitters, antennas, control systems, remote equipment, automation, computer and network systems, etc.
  • Helps facilitate maintenance and support of computer networks and related systems and to provide standard IT “helpdesk” service
  • Can supplement coverage in the absence of other engineering staff

Job Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to gain a working knowledge of applicable FCC rules and regulations
  • Basic networking and computer literacy in applicable software packages which may include Microsoft OS and Office, OpX automation, and other industry-specific applications
  • Ability to learn to troubleshoot broadcast equipment to the device level
  • Ability to learn to assist in troubleshooting and repairing AM and FM transmitting facilities
  • Basic practical understanding of electrical systems, including UPS and standby generators
  • Ability to learn to troubleshoot HVAC system problems and to perform minor maintenance
  • General knowledge of telecommunications systems employing POTS, VoIP, and ISP protocols
  • Ability to successfully interact with management and staff at all levels
  • Ability to multi-task and to handle pressures and deadlines, along with requisite skills in prioritizing
  • May be required to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders is required

Education and Licensing:

  • Associates or technical degree in Information Technology or related field or equivalent level of experience
  • SBE Certification a plus
  • Must possess valid state driver’s license and provide required proof of personal vehicle insurance
