CUMULUS MEDIA | (BIRMINGHAM) is searching for experienced Program Directors.  The Program Directors will be responsible for growing and operating strong brands and must have a strong background and passion for Music and Spoken Word Radio. Energy, enthusiasm and experience within the genre is a must.  You will be responsible for all aspects of programming including; commercial scheduling, managing on-air staff, imaging, station strategy, developing and executing revenue generating sales & programming promotions, website & social media, digital content and have a strong understanding of the core audience(s).

CUMULUS | Birmingham currently features 6 stations in the Birmingham area and surrounding counties.  Our stations include:  WJOX FM 94.5, WUHT Hot 107.7 FM, WZRR Talk 99.5, WJQX 100.5 FM, AM 690, and WAPI 1070 AM. The cluster of 6 stations reaches thousands of listeners on a daily basis.    

We’re looking for a track record of success.  Top candidates will be versatile and possess exceptional PD, On-Air and web/social media skills.  Digital and social strategies must be as engaging as on-air tactics and execution.  The best candidates will be detail oriented with the ability to multi-task and react in a calm and decisive way when dealing with challenging situations.  Excellent writing and production skills to image and brand your stations are essential.  People skills and the ability to work closely with talent, department heads and a talented sales team are critical.

Job Summary:

  • Applicants must play the topic hits of the day and understand how listeners consume news and information across all platforms of media that can be leveraged to create tune-in and to drive TSL
  • Digital and social media strategies must be as engaging as on-air tactics and execution.  All your air talent and news people must engage in social media every day with you monitoring. 
  • You should be a news and current events junkie that is plugged in to what people are talking about in DFW and around the world. Understand how to craft that into engaging talk show topics.
  • Besides overseeing the talk talent, you will also oversee the news director, news team, and one sports reporter to schedule news coverage in the most cost-efficient way by maximizing schedules of your full-time staff to cover all 7 days of the week.
  • The best candidates will be detail oriented with the ability to multi-task and react in a calm and decisive way in breaking news situations.  
  • You must be skilled in talent coaching with a proven record of making good talent great. You must understand how to ensure the news team and talk team work together towards the same station goals. At ease working with and communicating to all talk show talent, producers, board ops, news reporters, sports reporter, anchors, and the news director
  • Excellent writing and production skills to image and brand your stations are essential.  People skills and the ability to work closely and positively with talent, other department heads and an aggressive sales team are critical.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years’ of successful programming experience and winning track record backed by Nielsen Audio results preferred
  • Strong social and digital experience
  • Savvy computer skills and proficiency with ratings, research and music (Stratus) programs
  • Ability to multi-task and the discipline to focus on what is the highest and best use of your time
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with air staff, departments and clients
  • Creative and strategic problem solver
  • A strong understanding of PPM / Nielsen Ratings and ability to interpret various kinds of research
  • Deep knowledge of music, pop culture and current events and how they relate to the station’s target demo
  • Have and build great relationships in the music / entertainment community with a deep contact list
